Since I began homeschooling my kids, their education has been the priority. I schedule our days around that. The thing is, other things have to be a priority, too. Like making money, which means working.
Every school year, when we begin, I find that whatever schedule worked before doesn’t work anymore. I’m not sure why this is, but it never fails. I always spend the first few weeks trying to figure out a new schedule to ensure that school gets done, my work gets done, and I still have some time for friends, family and relaxation.
The biggest problem I’m finding right now is the part of my work that requires interaction with others. Social media, specifically. You see, the actual writing of the books? I can do that for a straight hour in the morning, fill in some more time by taking the laptop to bed for another hour or so and meet my word count goal for the day without much trouble. The books I want/need to read to improve my skills? I can read them while the kids are busy doing their school, or sitting on the porch while they play outside.
But social media? That’s harder to fill in. I can schedule a lot of stuff, sure. But I can’t schedule my responses to the responses I might get to the stuff I’ve scheduled. I have to have the time to actually go in and manually do that part myself. And that’s where the trouble is, because a lot of the time, this happens during the time I’m schooling the kids.
For the most part, Facebook doesn’t do much for me, but Twitter seems to be a more active area for me. But it moves so fast that by the time I’m done with school, it feels like it’s too late to go back and respond.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on this. Do you use Twitter? How long is too long to wait to respond, in your opinion? How do you schedule work (if you work from home and on your own) around school?
